Delays in development of gross motor skills, such as decreased balance, mobility such as rolling, crawling, walking, ability to ascend/descend stairs, jumping skills, and other activities can occur for several reasons. Often children with delays in these skills may demonstrate decreased safety performing activities and they could lead to a decrease in participation in school and with peers. Whatever the reason for the delays, strengthening of muscle groups that commonly can be weak, such as the core and hip musculature, through play and therapist directed activities, children can reach age appropriate milestones, increase their safety when performing skills, and increase their participation with peers.
